Glyphs owl house12/15/2023 ![]() Not only does Disney Channel's The Owl House not do anything creative with glyph magic, but it’s even contradicted its own rules at times, all of which comes together to make what should be the hallmark of the series feel weak. Luz’s glyph magic is one of the key elements of The Owl House, but even as the show enters season 3, it still hasn’t fixed the biggest problems surrounding it. ![]() That wouldn’t make up for the show doing so little with glyph magic before, but at the very least, it would allow for the show to end with the core concept of it finally being used. As for the general underutilization of glyphs, all that needs to be done for that is for Luz to use a wider variety of glyph magic in the final battles against Belos and the Collector. With the plot hole, it would be easy enough for a future episode of Dana Terrace's The Owl House to say that there was something specific about the portal or the key that prevented Luz from using them to draw power. A future episode might explain the discrepancy, but as of right now, it comes across as little more than a plot hole that makes the show’s treatment of glyph magic even worse.īetween doing very little with the core concept and introducing a blatant plot hole into the series, The Owl House has an obvious problem with its glyph magic, but it’s not too late for season 3 to fix things. If Luz couldn’t use magic in season 1 while being so close to the Titan, then it doesn’t make sense for her to be able to use magic in season 3. The problem with that is that when Luz was fighting Lilith in the Disney show, she couldn't use magic on Earth while standing in front of an open portal and while having the portal key’s supply of Titan’s blood directly on her person. ![]() In the season 1 finale, Luz discovered that she was unable to use glyph magic on Earth because she wasn’t able to draw power from the Titan, but in the season 3 premiere, she’s able to use glyph magic by drawing power from a vial of Titan’s Blood that had been hidden in a graveyard for centuries. Glyph magic has had its problems for a large part of the show, but The Owl House season 3 made it even worse by creating a plot hole with how it functions. It’s one thing for The Owl House to not do anything with the creative potential of Luz’s glyph magic, but introducing new glyphs that actually do play into the concept only to do nothing with them just makes the show come off as lazy there’s also a bit of irony in how The Owl House season 2, episode 2 had Eda state that glyph magic could be used to cast any spell a person wants, only for Luz to mostly just use the same spells she had been using since season 1. What makes it worse is that season 2, episode 15 showed Luz experimenting with four new glyph combinations unlike anything she had used before, but she never uses them again. For the rest of the season, Luz only ever uses the same four glyphs from season 1 with occasional uses of her invisibility and hover glyphs, which made it feel like nothing was being done that wasn’t already done in season 1. Season 2 introduced the idea of Luz combining and altering the four glyphs she discovered in The Owl House season 1 in various ways to create new ones, but nothing is ever done with that. ![]() The biggest problem with The Owl House’s glyph magic is how utterly underutilized the basic concept is.
